Biomedical Autism Intervention – Methyl B-12, Eye Contact and Headache
Author: Dr. Kurt Woeller
Biomedical treatments for Autism, including methyl B-12 injection therapy, have helped many children. Throughout my years in practice, I have met many people who have been helped by methyl B-12 injections so when I met a mother and her young son with Autism about a year and a half ago I was not surprised when she asked for methyl B-12 injections for her son. Her son was experiencing typical attention issues and also had a language delay. But then she also told me that she had trouble with attention for years herself and wanted to try methyl B-12 injections for herself as well.
At their six week follow up appointment I checked with them to see how things were going. Her son was progressing fine and she reported little in the way of increase in attention but what she did report was interesting. She mentioned that it relieved her head pain when she made eye contact with people. For years she suffered from head pain, in the back of her head, when she made prolonged eye contact with others. Once she started the methyl B-12 injections that pain stopped.
When I have the opportunity to treat adults or older children with Autism, I am always amazed at what they can tell me about their physical symptoms when they begin biomedical treatments. Often times they will report relief from head pain after starting methyl B-12. I even had one child who tapped his head when it was time for his methyl B-12 injection. As I thought more about this I realized that the visual cortex is located in the back of the head. As visual stimuli enters the eye, it is transferred to the back of the head.
This could explain why this mother was having headaches associated with eye contact. And we can begin to understand why many children with Autism avoid eye contact, if it is causing physical pain it makes sense. We know that eye contact is a very important way we connect with others and pick up on expressive and non verbal cues. We can begin to understand a little more of the behavioral issues in Autism and how they are tied to underlying physical issues.
